Rather complicated back-and-forthing. To summarize:

1513 Ponce de León claims it for Spain
1562 French explore, then settle near Jacksonville (Spanish soon conquer it; France then reconquers)
1586 English loot and burn Spanish St. Augustine.
1763 British get Florida in exchange for Havana, which they had captured from Spain
1781, 1784 Spain gets it back: first a part, then the rest
1821 Spain cedes it to US

Florida never belonged to France or Britain. It was part of Spain's American Empire, before they ceeded it to the United States in 1821. The French and British did try to take Florida to varying degrees of success, but never the entire peninsula, and never for very long.
