Hey... tolerant? I hope you don't include the Scots in this rather sweeping generalisation!

I don't think the Welsh stand for much "multicultural" nonsense either.

So that just leaves the Islamic republic of Englistan......who have my deepest sympathy incidentally.

I don't think its tolerance. I just think the British look at things in a different way.

The British don't live in fear and aren't as paranoid as America because there's a greater understanding of foreign cultures and therefore less uncertainty.

The British have a much more independent media than America, so see things from both sides. The British don't really tolerate everything, but are more understanding as they know that Britain is contributing to many global issues.

I think British people are very strong and have a culture of stoicism. Look at the way Britain dealt with the nightly bombings in WW2, or more recently the 7/7 bombings.

That wasn't tolerance after 7/7. It was the typical British attitude that refused to let sick murderers change people's life.

I think the British are tolerant to a certain level, but do have a limit.

Essentially because they have a deep seated confidence in themselves as a Nation. You will find that those with little or no self confidence are the most intolerant.

Darth Maul - Im laughing myself silly that you think only leftists can be tolerant. In my experience the most intolerant people are secular liberals unable to accept there might be other world views than their own.

it is a lesson learned thing.
These isles have seen it all before.
just read of the reformation, the plantations in Ireland, the wars against the scots and the welsh and then the union.
the civil war and execution on charles, the rump parliment and the levellers.
the romantics and the puritans and the Victorians and empire.
We brits know your pain, it seeps through our very veins and our arteries flow with the blood of a thousand years of misdeeds and suffering

The media and education system is very liberal. British Universities are centres of leftism.

However, there are a lot of conservatives and right-wingers as well, hence the BNP and UKIP.

You should have asked "Why aren't the British as tolerant as they used to be". Then we would have replied :"Cos they are fed-up with being Shat on, by Immigrants who get all the Benefits and who have not previously put anything into the Pot". Capish?
