There are 18 groups which are columns in the periodic table. The outer shell of each group has the same electron configurations, that is the orbital (s p d) as well as the number of electrons in shell. See figure at http://wine1.sb.fsu.edu/chm1045/notes/Struct/EPeriod/Struct09.htm for the orbitals (s p d) for periodic table.
