Is it legal to smoke (or possess) marijuana in New York?
My friend told me that they had decriminalized marijuana possession there... But what does it really mean?

It is decriminalized for the possession of small amounts.

~No, it is not legal. "Decriminalization" means that if you posess less than than 25 grams, you are arrested for a violation, not a crime, and, barring any narcotics or drug convictions during the preceeding 3 years, you pay a fine but you can't get jail time. However, as soon as you share a bowl or a joint or give some weed to a friend, you are guilty of a misdemeanor sale and lighting up in a public place is a crime.
