~Tenoh - better bone up on criminal prcedure before the Bar exam. You blew it. Ever read Learned Hand's decision about hearsay in the Grand Jury? What is a supporting deposition if not hearsay? How about all the exceptions to the rule? And don't forget the use of affidavits to establish ownership and permission?
As to the question, this is not about hearsay. The guy is accusing you from claimed personal knowledge. It is not a second party statement offered for the proof thereof. Most arrests are base on such complaints. Whoever "they" are, they are quite correct, if they get a deposition from him to support the charging paper. Conviction is another matter, but you may have to convince a jury he is purjuring himself.

You could be questioned, but not arrested and if you were, this would give your lawyer a field day with the police department. I think they are saying it to scare you into telling them everything you know. Just keep your mouth shut, you'll be fine.

You can be detained for questioning. An arrest requires probable cause. If there's no evidence that you were involved, then no formal charges can be lodged against you.
