This is just something I have been wondering since we had a counterfeit incident around town:

If you had fake money, but you didn't know it was fake because you didn't know how to tell the difference, could you still get in trouble for it?

No, I don't have any.

generally, no.

But don't knowingly try to pass counterfeit money, and then use the excuse that "I didn't know..."

That won't wash with the FBI. I know someone who tried to purchase bus tickets with some bills. The ticket agent ran a highlighter across the bills and told the person they were counterfeit. Now, this person was innocent, and apparently he received the counterfeit bills unwittingly. Now, if this person would have attempted again to pass off these counterfeit bills, after knowing they were counterfeit, he would have committed a crime.

If it was passed to you without your knowledge, don't worry, the treasury department will find out where it came from and hunt them down. Did you know the average counterfeit bill only stays on the street 3 minutes. It is more important to our government to find the people making counterfeit money than it is to catch murderers---the statistics tell us so.

they would question you and take the money. It depends on just how much of the fake money you had.

maybe if big amount involved, youll be in trouble, but if a few bucks only, you will be asked from where you took or who gave it to you. thats it.
