My friend said it wasn't good to touch a halogen light bulb with your fingers but when I asked why, he didn't know. Why is this? Is it bad for you or the bulb? I'm guessing you may not want to get the oils from your skin onto the light bulb, but I'd like to know for sure.

Any one know for sure?

Having worked with audio visual lamps for eons, I will tell you that the problem lies with the oils in your hands getting on the surface of the glass. Basically, that is what everyone else has told you. There is more to it than they are telling you.

If you put the bulb in with your hand, you can use alcohol to remove the oils and you will be home free. It is best to install it with a hankercheif or even a paper towell.

The oils left on the bulb react with the heat of the lamp and can cause the bulb to swell into a blister there and break. I have even seen on swell so much that it literally welded itself into a socket.

Before I turned it on, regardless of how I installed it, I would wash it with alcohol first

That's exactly the reason why - the oils from your skin will heat up and can cause the halogen bulb to explode.

First of all...if it is on Halogen bulds are HOT and will burn the crap out of your fingers...If it is cold...the oils on your fingers will shorten the life of the buld because they burn at a high temp and the oil effects the life of the bulb

If the light bulb happens to be on at the time you will get a nasty burn. A halogen bulb is much hotter than any other.

Actualy, it's not the oil itself.
It's the dust that collects to the oils over time that causes the bulbs surface to get too hot.

because the oil burns them out prematurely.. This is why they all have covers on them.. or should have when you buy a lamp. if they don't I would pass on buying it.. Ask someone who sells them, they can answer it far better then I..lol

they get extremely hot. The oils from your hand will burn, and might cause the light to fail soon.
