CA is a little overrated and people do have to work hard just to live, but people here are working at least. People in Michigan are not working and moving to other states for jobs. It's unemployment rate is 7.7%, which is either the highest or 2nd highest aftet Mississippi. I hear about a lot of people leaving Michigan. The auto companies are all shedding jobs and other manufacturers are doing the same. If your husband or yourself can manage to land a good job then MI probably would be real nice. Just make sure you go to a place where other people have jobs too; meaning stay away from Flint or Detroit or other manufacturing centers. I recently read a story in USA Today about tons of people from MI moving to MT b/c they're having an economic boom there and have tons of jobs.
You should go ask this question in the Detroit category too and see what people there think about the state. From what I hear it is not a good time in MI economically and many people are leaving. But if you can find a good job then your experiance probably would be a lot better.
listen to that poster below me, she seems to know and have experiance with both states. I grew up in Walnut Creek and have lived in San Diego for the past 6 years too, kind of a coincidence. Hey if you don't like where you are now in CA and decide against michigan move to San Diego, housing is going down and it's cheaper than the Bay Area or LA.

My life's schedule
Michigan 0-8
California 8-18
Michigan 18-adult
California....now here
I have always thought the move back to Michigan (went off to college there) was one of the worst mistakes...yes the cost of living is less, but with that cost saving you are losing sooooo much.....racial tensions are SKY HIGH, the weather is brutal, the economy for Michigan is disconcerting, tension and depression among residents is the norm....I think you would be doing your children a dis-service if you relocate there.......I pray for the residents still there, If I had a 30 bedroom home here....trust me there would be 33 runaway resident here from Michigan..
I read on the net there is a 16 percent move out rate there
Can you consider some where else ?

Michigan is a wonderful state. The Great Lakes are an amazing recreational resource. And you are right, house prices and living costs in general are much lower than you will find on either coast. Lets face it, people are pretty much the same no matter where you go. I think there is a misconception that midwesterners are simple and unsophisticated. You will find it all here. There are fabulously wealthy areas in Michigan. You will also find resort areas in Northern Michigan which rival resort areas anywhere. The winters can be harsh, though, especially for someone coming from california. Good luck.

Okay - straight up....I grew up in Michigan. Lived in Europe for 5 years, lived in Florida for a few and in Texas for few-er. I then lived in California for 15 years and when my husband retired from the military we moved to back to Michigan (he was from Canada) to be close to family. It was great for about five years. Having snow at Christmas was fun - spending holidays with family was fun - (only for a while though) yeah it was cheaper to live here, BUT wages were lower!
My youngest child graduates from high school this year. She will go to (hopefully) U of M for two or four years and then we are going back to California. I miss it so, so, SO much. I miss the weather. I miss the beaches. (I lived in the Walnut Creek area for six years and the rest of the time in San Diego) I miss the attitudes of California people and the culture! Michigan is like taking a step back in time. People (forgive me any Michiganders) are really hicks here. "Out-backers" is the word for them. And (now I'm really sorry!!!!) people from Michigan are fat and don't care about their appearances at all.
Stay in California....you will regret it if you come here. The economy is terrible - auto plants are closing, the unemployment rate is sky high...there are NO jobs to be found. Stay in sunny California and enjoy your surroundings! Life is good there!

Cons: As pronounced, fee of residing in CA is somewhat intense. site visitors is often somewhat undesirable interior the Bay section. risk of earthquakes. execs: the climate is easily plenty extra advantageous right here. by using the Bay section, decrease elevations don't get plenty less warm than freezing interior the iciness, bigger elevations can get snow yet few people stay in those aspects of the section. Dry season is extra or less April - September, and the climate is noticeably much continually very wonderful that entire time. No tornadoes, sleet, or freezing rain; hail and lightening storms ensue yet are uncommon. Our state legislature is unlikely after women's reproductive rights. you would be interior driving distance of the sea, and day out or weekend holiday distance from snowboarding/different outdoor activities interior the Sierra.
