In the earlier generation of computers, it was best to leave the computer turned on if you frequently turned it on and off (to prevent power spikes or extra electricity used when powering up). With newer generation of computers, there have been improvements to such technologies that there is no real benefit in leaving your computer turned on.

However, if you do decide to leave your computer turned on... put your computer in hibernation or standby mode when not used. This will still use energy but very little compared to leaving it turned on completely.

Turn off any screen savers and simply have your computer's power management application turn off the monitor when you leave your computer idle over a certain amount of minutes.

Some leave their computer turned on so that the computer can perform nightly maintenances (virus/spyware scanning) during hours that you're sleeping/not using the computer. But still configure your power management to go into stand by mode or hibernation after an excessive amount of idle time.

Hibernate, hit alt-F4 while on your desktop and choose hibernate. It saves you session to the disk so it takes 5 sec to turn back on. No power useage. If you can spare the time it might be best to turn it off. Also the spyware thing is bull**** you can't just send someone a virus. They need to open it or click on something.
