i heard about this on Coast to Coast AM with Goergr Nory i copied and pasted this so you could read it. do you think its going to happen or is it just crap. they said they expect it to happen in the next 10 to 15 years its kind of freeking me out.
Cyclic global catastrophic events throughout our past have created permanent gaps in recorded human history and technology. The Horizon Project research team operated by Brent Miller believes they have uncovered overwhelming scientific evidence that shows this catastrophic event is about to occur once again. Our solar system is quickly approaching what scientific research and ancient records refer to as "The Dark Rift" or "The Galactic Plain". This will result in increased gravitational influences upon our solar system; causing global devastation and loss of life on Earth. Shockingly, evidence has been left behind throughout human history which provides dire warning to future civilizations; warnings that have been ignored

Your second thought is correct. It's pure BS.

I listened to the same program. It left me wondering too. I just ordered the Horizon Project DVD and was skeptical about doing so after reading the Horizon Project website. I'm still researching the background of the project contributors to see how reputable they are. There story is very compelling, and a bit frightening.
It may in fact be a scare tactic drummed up to sell their DVD. But the more I research their data the more I'm convinced they may be right.
I have good reason to be concerned too. My house is right on the beach in Oceano California.
I wonder if this is the catastrophe I keep dreaming about? I keep having this reoccurring nightmare that I'm on the beach and it gets dark all the sudden. Then I look to the horizon and can't see it, I look up, then see the edge of the ocean. It's a mile high and coming right for me.
I always wake up before the water hits me.
The rest of my family refuses to even consider such a thing could ever happen. I think it can, and it has many times before.

P.S. Check out the links that Jayaaa provided. Thanks Jayaaa. I think his is the best answer.

Please don't worry about such things. As you apparently suspect already, it's just Crapola.

Scientists have given a lot of thought to what we know about the physical universe and the effect of celestial phenomena on our lives. There is no actual scientific discussion of such things as "The Dark Rift" or the "Galactic Plain," and these things are in no way related to actual structures or phenomena that real science has discovered.

Think a minute. The other stars that make up the Milky Way Galaxy are very, very far away, and we are not affected by their gravitational fields. In an environment of such weak gravity, why would we imagine that some sort of heretofore undetected geometric line across the galaxy be a cause of gravitational effects? And why would we think such a phenomenon might endanger the earth?

The answer is simple: it sells radio advertising and DVDs for media sharks that prey on the gullible.

So in a nutshell: you're right--it's BS.

By the way, there are no such ancient records, either. That's another layer of crapola.

The Horizon Project does sell a video for $24.95 on its website, so there is no doubt about money making operation. On the other hand, with 100% certainty, our solar system is going to pass through the gravitational plane of the Milky Way within the next few(?) years. And since this event occurs every few million years so there is no one alive today who can tell us for sure what is going to happen.

Michael R. Rampino
(NASA, Goddard Institute for Space Studies
New York, NY 10025
and New York University
New York, NY 10003) states on this website(http://abob.libs.uga.edu/bobk/ccc/cc020298.html )

… Solar System revolves around the center of the Galaxy about
once every 220 million years, and as it does so the Solar System
bobs up and down like a horse on a carrousel through the dense,
central portion of the galactic disk. In this cycle, the Sun and
planets pass through the dense region packed with stars and clouds of interstellar gas and dust ….

And from American Scientist
http://www.americanscientist.org/template/AssetDetail/assetid/21173/page/2
...The sun oscillates through the plane of the galaxy with an amplitude of about 230 light-years, crossing the plane every 33 million years...

When my daughter was on night time dialysis, I often listened to Coast to Coast while driving to pick her up.
Very entertaining at times - the key word here is "entertaining", certainly not educational.
Some of his guests ranged from alien abductees to people who talk to the dead.
I'm sure the story you heard, despite the ramifications, hasn't appeared in any scientific venue or even the mass media, for that matter.
And that's all you need to really know to logically file it away as good tabloid fodder - lead story next to Bigfoot Captured in Montana!

Pure, unadulterated BS.

If you want to learn about space and science, stick to legitimate websites and programs--there's plenty out there without wasting your time on conspiracy theorists or pseudo-science. Here's a few good sites to get you started:

nasa.gov
livescience
space.com
and for material (and broadcast listings) tht goes with programs like Nature and NOVA, pbs.org

Calm down there is no need for you to be freaked out. Many catastrophes happen on a daily scale so why do this scare you so?
its bs!

Anything can happen "tomorrow". We can get smacked by a comet, it by solar radiation, or even better, nothing at all happens. I think we are our own worst enemy. True to live life as normally as possible, love the people you love, and be happy with the little pleasures in life.
