hi, they are not babies for long,so do things you can change easily. so called $2 shops have things like bookshelves cheap. I would use a wallpaper border you can peeloff and change as child grows and matching cot quilt etc. rocking chiar if you are going feed in there,I didn't bother,my bed or comfy lounge chair is where I wanted to be. Idid use a change table as I had everything I needed at hand in there.
A toy box will be a must in a few months, jsust to put it all in one place, again the $2 will have one,if not already painted, paint themup to match the colors in the quilt.
have fun with it:)

I found Babies R Us/Kids R Us to have the greatest selection. As far as being in over your head, one thing that should minimize the anxiety of it all is to just paint the room one solid color and then use a border that matches the bedding and curtains.
I personally used the changing table all the time. It made live so much easier- I had all my changing supplies right there, I didn't have to bend or get poop on my carpet or bedding... . The essentials of any nursery are a crib and a dresser. I do like the rocking chair and book case. I stuffed both books and stuffed animals into ours. The changing table, dresser and book case are all things you could get at a second hand store. I wouldn't get the crib there because it may not be up to current guidelines for safety. Also I had a cradle that I kept in my room with me for the first few months anyways. There is no hurry to get the nursery done, you could always do a little at a time.
Congratulations & Good Luck!

Ok while baby is small you can use the crib as the changing table while the mattress is in its highest position. You can also try turning the dresser upside down and then just turn the drawer the other way and use the bottom of the dresser as the changing table. Think of the rim that is on the bottom of the dresser can help keep baby safe too. The book case will be a good idea but to help save on the budget look at second hand or baby consignment shops. The book case is good for storing things like diapers, cloth diapers, receiving blankets. You know those items that you need to get to easily and quickly. As for the theme you may be better just sticking with a generic theme like sports or teddy bears this way if the sheets don't exactly match the pillow they still go together because the theme match. Also check out burlington coat factory or babies are us. They usually sell entire bedding sets as one piece. Don't forget too that you still have your baby shower coming up. People want to buy for you, let them. Just make sure you let them know where you are registered. That will help you get what want and need and no duplicates. Good Luck and congrats...

Leave the bookcase till later all the stuff you have now is all you will really need for some time. I'd go for the rocking chair if you want it and have a look at buying a cot set (The one I bought came with a sheet set/pillow case, blanket, comforter, decrotive cot head) you can look at target, baby stores or online for these and go for a theme I love butterflies so what i did in my little girls rooms was bought a cot set that had butterflies on it, it comes with stackes of accesories but I only bought the nappy stacker cot valance and matching floor mat. I didn't buy the matching curtins as they were to expensive, i just went to a material store and got ginham curtins to match, i painted the room a light pink (brands like dulux have tester tins for about $8 australian i bought two of them and it did the whole room) then a got a deeper pink and painted the skirting boards and bought a butterfly stencil and painted them on the wall every 1/2 meter with the deeper pink. The room came up really nice and it didn't end up costing a fortune. The best advice is to buy accent pieces eg rug and cot set and use generic curtins etc. The only other two devices I liked when my baby was small was an electric rocker as i could pop her in there and she would rock away while i was cooking dinner(keep an i out for them as they do go on sale for about $100 at target) and a sound and movement monitor. If there are things you would like to buy but can't afford it tell people you want for example the rocker and they can put money into to it for you instead of buying you something you already have, if you are having a baby shower tell who ever is doing it that you would like a certain item and everyone can put it some money to buy it for. good luck and have fun I loved my little girls room when it was finished

You don't really need a bookcase yet--the baby won't have enough stuff to put on it. Since you already have a changing table, one of those organizers for diapers that hangs on the end might be a good idea. (I put a changing pad on the dresser and have milk crates stacked up at the end to separate diaper sizes, store diaper genie refills and creams.) A hamper or hanging laundry bag is a must. A rocking chair is nice if you've got the money for one. I'm a baby swing person, myself--could not get through the colic without it! Also, I REALLY needed my diaper genie.

I wouldn't go matchy, matchy. That way if people want to buy things, they don't go overboard. My friend did Winnie the Pooh and everyone bought Winnie the Pooh stuff and she didn't get the stuff she really needed. People just kept buying Winnie the Pooh stuffed animals.
Also go with something neutral and then you don't have to take all away when you get the older bedroom furniture. If you go with say butterflies/ballerinas/or just pink or purple for a girl or sports/trucks/ or blue for a boy it is much easier to find a comforter or quilt to coordinate later and you don't lose all the things you put on the walls.
1. Rocking Chair is a must. I didn't get one until the 2nd child and let me tell you, it was much easier. Note: Get one with padded arms. It really helps when feeding.
2. A bookcase is nice, but we waited until Birthday #2. That way we knew what kind of bedroom furniture they were going to have and it matched that.
3. The Diaper Champ- It worked much better than the diaper geenie and uses regular trash bags.
Oh and shelving. You can use it later and the kids will love you for it.
Don't get a diaper warmer. Useless....

My 9 month olds room has only crib, dresser and rocking chair. But he's never in there except to play when I leave the door open. He has a Pac k N' Play in our room, but he's rarely in it either. LOL
Use the $500 to start a college savings fund instead. In the end thats going to be more important than extra pretties in his bedroom at this point.
Congratulations BTW!!

I have raised 3 daughter and am raising 2 of my 7 grandchildren.
There were 3 things I could not live without.
1. A rocking chair
2. A baby swing (battery operated)
3. A very small trash can right beside the changing table
All of the other fluff things I could live with out but those are the things I had to have.

I am not a mother, but I love to help decorate infant nurseries and have been a babysitter in many of them. A really nice addition is a bookcase/shelf for toys. Rocking chair and SWING! Swings have been a lifesaver for many a mom. Another nice thing to have is a bouncy seat. Infants love them! A good CD player and some music made just for infants. OR if you sing really good, or even if you don't, make a tape/CD of your voice, that is a great infant soother. Baby monitors are great, but you ar more in want of furniture ideas. Another good thing to have is a diaper pail. Hope it helps and congratulations!

I never used a changing table. I thought they were a waste of money. I changed my kids on the floor or the couch with a blanket under them.
I got a lot of stuff for my babies rooms on Ebay. You can find lots of themes there.
Also try places like Big Lots (Dont know if you have them where you live).
I never used a diaper pale either or a diaper genie. Waste of money. I used the dollar store disposable bags and only put the poopy diapers in them. Just threw the urine ones away. They never stunk.
I loved the bouncer and exersaucer thing. I also loved the play pen! The swing was ok but my babies outgrew it too fast!
Car seat and stroller is a must!
Don't buy a lot of clothes cause they outgrow them so fast!!!
I used cloth diapers as burp rags. They were very absorbant and they came in a pack of like 8 and they werent' too expensive.
