My great grandfather started researching our family back to about 1640. No one has done any work on it since the 70's, but I'd like to pick it up and see how far back I can go.
What my grandpa found was that my forefather is William Ash who came to the new world as a pastor and settled in New Hampshire.

Its a pretty cool finding, and I'd love to know more about that.

It's all about records management...unfortunately, the only register in the early days were mostly church books (unless you're of noble birth, then there would be your own family books). My oldest evidenced ancestor Mathess H died in 1650 in the same village were my dad was born. No glory there, Mathess was a serf ;-)
Can't get back further as the local church got burnt down in the War of 30 Years (1618-1648), and all the papers went up in flames. (What are wars good for? Absolutely nothing...;-)

In this country main branches of my family tree have recorded births from the 1600's and back to Europe several generations before.

It depends on how good the records are and how much time you're willing to spend tracking them down. I've gotten clear back to 200 AD on one line of my family.
