Very close -- of course it depends what part of New York, and what part of Connecticut, but there are many people that work in New York City and commute in from Connecticut. Its just up the coast, and accessible by car, train, bus, etc.

(Note re above: if you are travelling from NY and you see Providence, you've gone too far.)

Go north and the east from New York, after seeing Providence you are in Connecticut.

Depends... You can cross the state line in 45 minutes from NYC

by train maybe 40 minutes in miles perhaps 38 NNE miles
