Tragedy

It's a tradgedy because as we know, it's loosely based on the Tragedy 'Romeo & Juliet," by Shakespeare. And it's tragic for this man and woman love each other, but are torn apart by circumstance...they are each part of a rival community (Jets and Sharks). And in the end is death...a tragedy is anywhere when success looks possible, but ends in the opposite such as a death.

Animosity. Both the Sharks and the Jets hate each other because of their ethnic backgrounds. They each feel that they are better. It is like it still is today, hatred of different races. Whites thinking the are better than Hispanics and African Americans and vise versa. West Side Story pretty much set the tone for gangs in America.
