I have found that BETTA PLUS bowl conditioner is quick and easy. I simply put one capful in 1/2 gallon of room temperature tap water. I then take out my betta by net and place temporarily into a salad bowl (with about three drops of the conditioner in it). After I have rinsed his little tank, I pour this fresh water in, then pour him back in. It is immediate, the water is safe and I have done this weekly for 3 months with no problem. I originally picked it up at WalMart. Another one which I'm going to try is Wardey Essentials Bullseye 7.0 It is also at my local WalMart.

You can use something like "Start Right" or "Aqua Safe" to condition the water first. Some of the conditioners have to set in the water for a little bit of time, while others can be put in the water and the water can be used immediately.
You referred to your Betta fishes as "them". Only one male Betta can be in a bowl by itself, or it will attack other Bettas or other fish. Didn't know if you knew that or not.

Hi Jackie! My Betta is 3 years old. I use StartRight, put a couple of drops in his bowl when I clean his bowl and add fresh tap water, bag him up and float him for 15 minutes and drop him right in. :) He's happy as can be. :)
By the way, if your fish was healthy when purchased, he will not "die easily." You don't have to feed him every day (you can leave him for a weekend if you have to). If I were you, I would cover the top of his bowl (loosely, so air can get in). Bettas WILL JUMP.
Bettatalk.com is the best Betta site I've seen so far. Good luck with your new friend. I love mine.

You can put them in tap water if you put a few drops of water conditioner in. I have a Betta at my office, and I use tap water. i got the water drops at PetSmart. It was a couple dollars. Not too expensive. But it makes tap water safe.

As with all fish you must dechlorinate the tap water before you put your betta in it. The easiest way it to purchase tap water conditioner, which is readily available at any pet store.

Ok.... I've had mixed results. According to everything I've read you are NOT supposed to use tap water, the chlorine will kill the fish. I use "Bowl Buddies" a water conditioning fizz tablet, it makes the water safe for fish in minutes and is avaliable at your local walmart for like $2. However, two friends of mine use tap water and their fish are still alive (its been about 2 weeks of using tap water for them). So I would reccomend the bowl buddies....it makes water safe (up to 2 gallons per tablet)......hope this helps

Tap water is fine if you remove the chlorine. This can be done with a treatment sold in stores. Or you can age it in an open container for 48 hours.
