Your first answer, from airbob6, is wrong. The numbers vary from state to state, and year to year. I can can give you one example, that of New York State:

The death penalty costs far more than life in prison. The extra costs begin even before the trial. New York spent over 200 million dollars to sentence just 7 men to death since 1995. Only 4 of the 7 men had an appeal (just one). The cost of imprisoning someone, in New York State, is $35,000 per year. Speaks for itself.

The cost of an execution is certainly infinitely cheaper than warehousing an inmate in prison for the rest of his life.
