I am currently 29wks 3 days pregnant with my first child. In 8wks i am going to commence maternity leave for a year.

I am looking forward to a few weeks of being at home before baby comes (assuming baby isn't early) - i could really do with some rest and relaxation! lol. But i'm a bit daunted by being at home for a year.

I have always been very work-orientated. I enjoy the mental stimulation and i'm accustomed to the long hours and stress that comes with my work. Pre-pregnancy my work hours could be anywhere between 60-75hrs p/wk. As i've progressed in my pregnancy i've reduced them significantly to between 40-50hrs p/wk due to tiredness!

Thinking about being home for a year.. well i worry about adjusting. I know it won't be easy (looking after a newborn) but the mental stimulation won't be the same either.

How did you, or are you, adjusting to leaving a demanding fulltime job to staying at home to raise your baby?

Thanks alot!

I'm 28wks and started maternity for 9mths plus 5wks holidays 3wks ago. Am due to return in november and like you i am very work orientated and have worked all my life! At first i was frightened and excited, it takes a while to sink in that you dont have to get up for work in the mornings. I took up swimming during the week which has helped me fill my time and i visit my friends (the ones who have kids and don't work) they see me more now that they ever did! My mum also gets a better chance to spend time wiv me and we meet up every Monday for lunch and a chat... I have been lucky enough to find things to keep me occupied and im sure that when my baby comes along i'll have my hands full so im enjoying it at the moment. When i go back to work in November >> im sure i'll be glad to be back :-)
Overall my advice to you would be to keep yourself busy busy busy!!

I am in the same predicament as you, but the difference is, is that I'm only going to take off 6 months (so I can be back in time for christmas) but I have invested in a hobby (cross stitching) maybe thats a idea that might help pass off some of that time you'll have with your baby.

I also work long hours and I love it, but since I've been pregnant I've cut down also, I think you will be so busy your not going to mind stayign home and when you see the baby your going to want to spend all your time with it your going to be thankful to be off a year and when that years up I ebt you won't wanna go back!--good luck and have fun!
