In the winter months there is less humidity in the air, which is the cause of the static electricity. Make sure you always use fabric softener for all of your laundry, and invest in a humidifier. They really do help to put the moisture back into the air.

the best way to et rid of static electricity is to get a humidifier. The static is caused by dry air allowing friction to create a static charge (although it can be fun to zap the cats after petting them)
A whole- house humidifier is ideal, bought from your local heating and air conditioning company- but you can buy a portable type from Lowe's or Home Depot.

Using a quart size spray bottle, put about 1/4 cup (or less) liquid fabric softener and fill the rest with water. Shake, spray on clothes, carpets, furniture. When the bottle gets low, just fill with water and just a couple tablespoons of softener. Use as needed.

Leigh, use water softener in the washing machine, keep away from nylon of any form e.g. stockings [there are alternatives] you will find that clothing lining or slips hold static, just run a wire coathanger over them when they stick to you and when you are out and about wear leather gloves in the winter, specially when touching anything metal e.g. car.
good luck

friction between different materials will cause this. If you are constantly getting shocked try this when you feel friction building up( when you touch doorknobs and get shocked ) stop for about ten seconds. This will make the built up charge drop back down to the ground. Of course you will look silly doing so but not sure what else would work.
