The other day somebody played a prank on me in my dorm by smearing a banana all over my doorknob. When I cleaned it off, the doorknob had become all clean and shiny. Is there like, some kind of chemical reaction going on that made this happen?

d-limonene comes only from citrus rind. Banana oil is contained on the inside part of the peel and it is a cleaner, in fact it's a great shoe polish.

no, banana it's just alkaline, and your doorknob is probably made of aluminum ? You just polished the surface of the aluminum (that slowly oxidize in the air) and removed the opaque Aluminum oxide.

banana oil is just isoamyl acetate, great for polishing shoes.
