Athena, was the goddess of warfare and wisdom in Greek mythology. At birth, she sprang, full grown and dressed in armor. She represented the intellectual aspect of war. The Greeks also worshiped her as the patroness of arts and crafts. She was skilled at spinning and weaving.

She never married. Athena's most famous temple, on the Acropolis in Athens, is called the Parthenon.

Well, I can tell you the effect society had on Athena. In Pre-Hellenic times, She was a Goddess of wisdom. When the myths of later Greece and Rome were altered to make male deities dominant over Goddesses, Athena became the image of the male-identified female, being "born" from Zeus without a mother. She is still revered in some ways, or there wouldn't be a replica of the Parthenon in Tennessee, complete with huge statue of Athena as She would have appeared in ancient times. Today She is usually viewed as a woman trying to be a man - the stereotypical "ballbuster" you'd find in business or politics. That's a shame, because it alienates Her from many Goddess women who grew up with this image of Her.

Athena's Weaknesses: Reason rules her; she is not usually emotional or compassionate but she does have her favorites, such as the beleaguered hero Odysseus.

Birthplace of Athena: From the forehead of her father Zeus.

Athena's Spouse: None.

Athena's Children: None.

Some Major Temple Sites for Athena:The city of Athens, which is named after her. The Parthenon is her best-known, and best-preserved, temple.

Basic Story for Athena: Athena was born fully-armed from the forehead of her father Zeus - according to one story, this is because he swallowed her mother, Metis, while she was pregnant with Athena. Although Zeus's daughter, she could also oppose his plans and conspire against him.

Athena and her uncle, the sea god Poseidon, competed for the affections of the Greeks, each providing one gift to the nation. Poseidon provided either a wonderful horse or a salt-water spring, but Athena provided the olive tree, giving shade, oil, and olives. The Greeks preferred her gift and named the city after her.

Interesting Fact: One of her epithets (titles) is "Grey-eyed". Her gift to the Greeks was the useful olive tree. The underside of the olive tree's leaf is grey, and when the wind lifts the leaves, it shows Athena's many "eyes".
