Talk privately with her teacher and see if she will buddy her up with a classmate. This is a common practice that teachers usually do when there is a new student in their class. The "buddy" is given time to show the new student around the school, (gym, library, washrooms, office, etc.)and familiarize the new student with school and classroom rules and routines. The "buddy" also sits with the new student at lunch and goes out with the new student at recess for the first few days. She introduces the new student to other friends and includes her in whatever they may be playing. Eventually the new student finds and develops new friendships this way.

Be supportive and keep communications open and positive. Grade four is a transition year from Primary to Junior and she needs to learn to be an independent problem solver.

The "buddy" system is a good way to help a new student feel comfortable, included and to find new friends.

Good luck!

There are a few ways to try and help her addapt to a new school, be there for her. Bake some cookies with her and talk about how school was. Ask her about her teacher and the class mates. Maybe in a few months when she is comfortable with the school and her class, she can invite a few friends over to get aquainted with, maybe bake some cookies while you supervise.

Maybe when there is no school, take her to the school so she can show you around the building, the playground, the big yard where they play sports, etc.....just compliment the school and let her know that you are so proud of her of wanting to be a part of this school, hold her hand and tell her that you love her and let her know that she will meet new friends too! (smile)

Sometimes if you are packing a lunch for her, buy her something special for starting her first year of school!

It is hard, have your daugther host a pyjama party to invite some friends from school to come over. Parent's who host party events end up having popular children.

I remember Grade four, that can be very rank too - friends getting possessive of friends (children at that age for some reason are not that accepting).
