From experience, I would say sleep deprivation. In order to fully absorb information, you have to be awake and alert. Without sleep, you can still go to class, take notes, etc., but it is very difficult to actually take in the information. I made it through school by pulling all nighters to study for exams. I would go to class and pass the exams, but an hour later, all the information would be gone and if I had to take the test again, I would surely have failed. This also deals with cramming. Studying over time is much more beneficial than cramming at the last minute. Retaining info is much easier if you space out your study sessions, and not wait until the night before, like so many students do, including myself. And of course, one has to have a geniune want to learn and put forth an effort. There's also class distractions, both inside the classroom and outside (such as cars going by). Also, the teacher has a lot to do with how well you learn. I learn better with a teacher who makes the class interesting, engages students, and incorporates new ideas and changes into each lecture.
