I believe in the quote that we fear what we don't understand and one of those things is the future - there is so much uncertainty in things like work and the future life that people feel like they are loosing control over what will happen. The only way to overcome this fear is not necessarily to understand the future but just to accept it and come to realise that it will come eventually and that what you do in the present will effect what happens in the future and that way people will feel like they have more control

if the unknown is really unknown then it is nonsensical to fear it...the problem is that many people tend to personalize this unknown and make it real. the best thing to enjoy life is not to fear or worry in advance...Who knows what will happen in the future? You have to face the problem when it is in fromnt of you , not 2 weeks in advance...Many times when you are worried because of something that has to come in the future and you cannot stop think about it every moment then when the moment arrives and you face whatever you were worrying about, you realise that you are much more capable than you thought and the problem is turned into a small nuisance you have already passed. So why feel fear for whatever may comes? Q será , será whatever will be will be the future´s not ours to see, que será será

Don't worry! many people say they 'live like its their last day on earth'. Well, in this respect, everyone would not care about what happens and the world would completely run down! I guess what I'm trying to say is that ignoring the unknown is not a solution. A healthy inquisitive attitude towards the 'unknown' can lead to wondrous discoveries--such as a new job or even moon landings. Yes, we sometimes fail, but should fear keep us back?
In response to mellen's answer, I do not think that "God helps those who help themselves". God helps everybody and only by resigning the complete 'control' we have over our lives to Him can we be truly blessed.

Personally, I feel there is a fear there because we all worry about other people's perceptions of us. We all have a fear inside us that we are not good enough and are always trying to prove ourselves to be good in some way. If there was no stigma attached to how people perceive us a lot of what you ask would be done away with. Everyday I try to live life as though it were my last day on earth - until reality sets in and I have to deal with something that blows away that attempt. Some would say a higher power of some sort takes care of this question. I personally believe in God, some would believe in Allah or some other Supreme Being to help them achieve a victory over fear of the unknown. But I also believe that God helps them that helps themselves and we have to have some accountability in our own lives. I wish everyday to be thankful for what I have and to be "good enough." I also hope that I am good enough in my wife and kids eyes. Ultimately if I have God, my wife and my kids - everything else can take care of itself. Good question!

Good question, young lady. Do you have a dream? Will you regret not doing it? The first time thru the studio door will be the hardest. Do it and don't look back. What's the worst that can happen? You go home crying. Don't let yourself omit this dream from your life because of a little fear. I've been afraid to take some chances, myself.

We scared of the unknown because we all have vulnerabilities. We concern about what may hit us and cost us what we have. For people who has no possession, loves one, they are fearless. They have nothing to lose but their own lives.
As you become older, have a family and love ones, have possession and a certain quality of livestyle. You would hate to lose them. That is a attachement to your concern.
People can prepare for the worse case but it is not fool proof. There are always something that they will lose something they cherish.
That's why people don't like uncertainty and unknowns.

By human nature, we start out hungering for perfection. We think we are the "it" factor and everything revolves around US in this so-called, "Perfect world." That's what our minds told us when we were little.
Think about it, as babies, we cry and our parents would change our diapers for us. We cry again and our parents would feed us. We cry again when we need attention and they would give us that attention.
Taking that aspect of thinking, "I cry and you serve," we use it in our early years after infancy. It's like we're testing the waters to see if it still works. And it works for quite some time until our parents are fed up with it. Our cries become tantrums, because it doesn't work any more. We are frustrated and so are our parents.
Cries now result in forms of punishment. We start thinking to ourselves, "Maybe crying is not acceptable in this perfect world." So we resort to other methods such as talking, but nothing seems to work anymore. This perfect world is not so perfect afterall.
The concept of imperfection is what shapes us into who we are today. We fear imperfection.
While imperfection is what really exists, there are side effects to it. Some of us resort to anger.
Anger becomes deviance.
Deviance results in loss of self-control. Some of us become criminals. Some of us are serving life sentences in jail.
Everything in this life revolves around that concept of imperfection, which is the "unknown" that we are talking about here.
Imperfection.
You can only master it by believing in yourself and believing in your strengths. Believe in this imperfection that just because it's your weakness, you still have your strengths.
Strengths can be a lot of things. God, your loved ones, your car, your home, your family, your pets, your marriage, your well-being and so forth.
Let your strengths overcome your weaknesses and the unknown will just be nothing, but an unknown.

Hi. Biologically we are afraid of the unknown because we do not know if there is danger (in that cave, on that river, over the horizon, etc.). We seem to be alone among the species in our capacity to measure times passing. This lets us know a future is coming and we cannot tell what it holds. It probably does NOT hold wolves.

People who are scared of the unknown areprobably unable to trust in their adaptive capacity: "their creative flexibility in decision making and problem solving".
"Living in the present" (like an ostrich) cannot really be a solution, as it is merely another way to blind oneself, and to deny the confrontation with one's inadequacy to cope with uncertain or threathening circumstances.
Psychological resilience is more desirable attitude.
