I know there is a question like this that was asked the same way but I got the same problem but the answer that he got can not help me. I just got my computer back up (crashed) and I now have windows 98 on it. But now I can only pick from 2 colors (black and white) and 16 colors. I am about to update the drivers but I read some of the comments on it and it does not seem to help with this update. One of the comments was something like "I set out to get my 256 colors back and this update does not help" So can anyone help me?

If your video is onboard, meaning built into the motherboard, you need to check out what brand and model motherboard you have, and locate their website, as they will have drivers.
If you have an independent video card, check the model number and at http://www.driversguide.com you can make a free account and search for your drivers (if you can't find a model number, there will be a series of numbers on the largest black chip on the card)

Really...please consider getting a new PC. That thing sounds so old!

OK, ignore what the forum says, you're going to need to update the drivers. Maybe the person who said that was using the wrong drivers or maybe those drivers don't work.

Check craigslist for used PCs. Might be easier. I bet you can get a better one for about 100 bucks.

Right Click on any vacant spot on your desktop to open the settings menu. If you cannot set more than 16 colors you probably don't have the drivers installed for your video card. Why use a non-supported OS when you can get an up to date one for free. Check out UBUNTU linux at ubuntu.com. You also get tons of software (including OpenOfice) for free.

Yeah, it's the driver, you either need to reinstall the driver or choose which driver to use. Check to see if there is some option to change which driver windows uses.

Windows is using the basic one right now. That is just so you can see the screen so you can upgrade the drivers.
