Vista home basic is not any more pricey than xp was at first. The home basic starts at 100 dollars and Ultimate is 400, just as an upgrade. If you buy the complete system reformatter, so it is like a new computer, you will have to fork over more money.

If you get the home version of Vista, it costs about $100.00. But I don't recommend that version, because it includes absolutely nothing... just a new look. The next step up, Business Version (I believe that is what it is called) goes for about $200.00. That's the way to go. But, make sure that your computer is Vista ready... otherwise you may run into some problems.

you don't need to update right away. If you really want to get Vista, wait about a year to give microsoft time to work out all the bugs that will pop up.
