We started snowboarding recently, and I picked it up really fast, but she is having some problems with turning. She's scared of the point where you are pointing directly downhill so she just doesnt do it, instead she goes forwrd, then backward, then forward in a kind of big zig zag down the slope. What tips can I give her to do the turn?

The thing with turning is that its easier when you are going faster, but when you are learning you do everything in slow motion so this makes it extra hard for some people to learn it. I would imagine when she is pointing directly downhill she feels out of control as the board picks up speed, and shifts her weight backwards making it very hard to complete the turn as you really need your weight on your front foot to turn. I had this problem myself and founed the best way to learn, was to turn into the fall line as fast and hard as i could and then just whip the board rouned using my body. So i was managing to turn even though it was technically a poor turn but it gave me the confidence knowing that i could get rouned even if by cheating a bit. Once the fear of falling and loseing control is lessened she will stop shifting her weight backwards and the turns will just start to flow naturally.

I'd suggest she take a lesson first off. If she doesn't want to, I'm assuming you guys are going on the "easy as anything" runs. If not, you should be. In any case, if she's scared of falling, give her knee pads and wrist guards which will help with any impact, and tell her to shift her weight and slightly lean when the snowboard is pointed downhill and it'll turn on its own.

what i usually tell my friends, when they just start, is that they should keep their weight onto their front foot (i wouldn't say all of your weight but more than half) and they should try turning by turning their torso and looking in the direction they want to turn. if they are scared of going down a slope, i would suggest the bunny slope, lots of demonstrations, and lots of positive encouragement.
