There's a buddy of mine, and he's going to court for something like having a tatoo that meant something, like some sort of code, and he got busted and is going to trail and could spend a year in jail. Is this true, or did I not hear him right?

Seems rather strange to be jailed for a tattoo and a whole year at that. There is a part missing to the story, maybe you missed part of it. Even if the tattoo is part of the story it is certainly not all of it

If the tattoo was copyrighted it might mean a civil case and court. But no jail time there. If the tattoo was libelous I suppose some one also ask for damages. In the U.S. I doubt very much that any tattoo could be attached to a criminal code. Ugly they are but not illegal. A swastika might get your head busted but no jail time.

I guess this could be true if it was gang affliation or something. Or it could be that the tattoo was recoginzed by a witness or something. However, this does not sound entirely true. I don't think you could be put away for having a certain tattoo, unless there was other evidence to put him away. Maybe if you have a chance, ask him about it again.

There are certain tattoos that symbolize membership to a gang.
He might have one (either by accident, not knowing it was a gang tattoo. Or on purpose. NOT making any accusations here). Having one could immediately send off a detector to law enforcement that the person who has that tattoo has been involved in crime and illegal activity.

well if you have a giant MS-13 ot BLOODS 4-EVER, or some other tat that is associated with violent cri9minals, you could certainly be harassed for it. and more than likely you could end up being clearly ID'ed by a casual observer of any crime.

but the Tat itself is legal, and there is nothing that can be done about it.

While he should be protected by the 1st Amendment, there are a few things which if said (or I suppose had tattooed) could get you in some trouble. For instance threatening someone with violence is illegal.

Sounds like it was a gang tat and he was easy to spot because of it. He just wants to shift the blame. Plus, he probably doesn't want you to know he is so stupid that he got himself busted.

You probably heard incorrectly. Clean your ears out and ask him again. Having certain tattoos can make you a susceptible suspect, but it can not send you to jail, unless found guilty of committing a crime

Not here in the US but my dad had one of a naked lady on his arm and one of the countries he went to in the Merchant Marines wouldn't let him enter till her had it fixed.

There are plenty of tattoos that can get you in trouble if you are IN jail though.

Here is a scenario: Since it is conspiracy to commit a felony to have a written methamphetamine recipe in your possession...How bout a tat with the same recipe?? Think about it.
