Though the two versions were written in 1959 (novella) and 1966 (novel), I don't believe the year of the story is given.

Charlie is 37 years old in the original novella and 32 years old in the full novel.

I would think that Flowers for Algernon would take place in the 1950s, since that was when it was written. Something of a current-events story to promote change.
