Who did you buy the computer from? If it was from branded OEM like DELL or HP then they should have given you either of the two things:
1) Recovery CD
2) Operting system CD (OS CD)
If you have any of these two then you can read the instructions that came with the system. To run OS CD, you will need to boot up the system from CD and format the drive to clear everything and start installing everything all over again. About 3 hours job!!
With recovery CD, you will be up and running within 30 minutes.

If you want your computer blanked to the same standards that the police, local and national government and the CIA use, download DBAN. It works by writing Zero's to every single sector on the hard disk, effectively destroying all data. It is IMPOSSIBLE to recover the data after using dban, and will leave the drive totally blank, but still physically working and usable by someone else, albeit they will have to install an operating system on it. You can get DBAN from dban.sourceforge.net. or search on yahoo. Hope that helps :) IT@tonicweb.co.uk

Change your hard drive. My hard drive crashed so i didn't have the choice there. New hard drives are cheap, for as little as 15 pounds for 40 Gb. It's easy to connect (inside the motherboard). You need to reinstall your Windows programms and it's like having a new pc!

Well, if you bought a name brand chances are your computer came with a recovery cd. Or it has a utility partition. Check with your manufacturer.
Then you can Format (Erase everything off the drive) and reinstall your operating system with that CD or the utility partition.

you need to bin the hdd. there is no way of completely wiping all the info from your pc, even a 20 000 pass erase will still leave enough information for a technician to retrieve

when you first tunr your computer there is a line like "press (key) to (something)" push that key nd it takes you to like a basic setup screen. This is where you can change the start up functions and wipe your hard drive clean (it may take several hours).
