Electron microscopes:
1. use a beam of electrons focused with magnets
2. show an image on a screen or photographically
3. have higher magnification
4. produce a black-and-white (no color) image
5. require extensive preparation of specimen

Light microscopes:
1. use a beam of light focused with glass lenses
2. allow user to look at the specimen directly
3. have lower magnifiction
4. show color

The previous answer was great. To that, we can add that electron microscopy allows you to perform techniques such as x-ray diffraction, which lets you determine the elemental composition of samples. And as a disadvantage, biological samples used in electron microscopy are killed by the preparation procedure.
