Since this question has come under the title of Philosophy on the Answers circuit, I will abide in this respect by responding accordingly.
I will preface this first by saying, philosophy pre-dated science; and second, science and religion are inexorably tied. Thus, we cannot address your answer without bearing the concert of the principles that overlie life as we know it -- or don't.
You could well re-frame this from an interrogative to a declarative sentence. Why?: well, 'when' [not 'if'] one dies, one does re-live considerably the same takes on life on the physical plane till such time as the teachings for which one is sent here to learn are sufficiently mastered -- not perfectly so but to an apt measure of balance, for perfection cannot be had here in the physical worlds...
Now, while one is given a new suit of clothes, say, and a new wardrobe of circumstances, most of which appearances affect to be a distinct difference, this is not at all the case. For the experiences are but new turns on familiar themes for not all but many. There 'are' those who succeed at scaling the walls put in front of them: and this happens more than one would think actually.
In any case, it is on this 're-visit' that we do afford ourselves the opportunity to shift the underlying principles that spawn the conditions we did endure in the former life. And in truth, such is the time when we are brought to that state to ask, What? and Who? would we be.
This phenomenon is not fancy, imagery or mere happenstance but considerably inevitable and real.
Mind you, until the fundamental engrams switch off or, depending on the nature of what constitutes the balance state, and depending on the origin of that engram or set of engrams, they switch on.
Bear in mind here, one's DNA and natal horoscope; one's karma and the associated and deep engrams, are what determine what role that an individual is to play or work toward, and where he or she lives and the family into which he or she is placed, and finally, the life contract to which he or she has agreed, and thereby must abide, which directive in no way differs from that of a contract one agrees to in a business setting. For it is a high promise that the universes would prefer not be breached or violated, though this certainly happens as well, and rather commonly -- even to the graphic extent and degree that is suicide.
The systems of the god worlds have well designed the universes as schools in which we all learn and draw light and wisdom, and a rough go it is indeed.
And each step and moment for which we gain merit, we do collapse time, energy, space, and matter. We do, say, skip certain grades or lessons; say, we fast-track in some instances. But it is common that we must 'repeat' the similar circumstances -- not the exact of course, because the universes are far too creative to limit themselves so.
Point is, these same universes are pursuing to get you to become as equally diverse and therewith resonate with them.

I would come back as me, hopefully with more knowledge. Then I could live my life and make a whole bunch of new mistakes. Ha

If I had the choice to be anything Id choose to be one of Angelina Jolie's bras. Cause all Id have to do is sleep most days and on the days I had to go to work I'd look forward to lifting and separating. ;)

I would be ME but I would try a different country such as England.
I have way to much fun being myself to ever want to be anyone else.
: )
