Its called copy protection. Your DVD recorder that senses a copy protected DVD and either will not copy the disk, or creates an un-useable copy.
If you want to make a legal archive copy you are going to have to buy a software program that rips the DVD program and then burns you a copy. That is done on your computer..

Ok, I am assuming that you want to make a archive copy of your DVD that YOU bought! right?
Anywho.... You first need to decrypt the DVD so that you can copy the files onto your HDD. This is called decrypting. You can use a number of FREE programs for this task. DVD decryptor, DVD Shrink, Fab DVD are some of the better ones out there.
Most Commercial DVD's are bigger that 7 gigs in size. Odds are that you will be making copies onto a 4.7 GB blank DVD right? So now you will have to "shrink" the VOB files (the movie itself) so that it will fit onto a 4.7 GB DVD. This is where DVD shrink comes into play. DVD Shrink will compress the VOB files so that it will fit onto a 4.7 GB DVD and PRESTO! you are almost done! Now you can use any DVD burning software (I like Nero) to make a copy of the DVD.
Thats it ! Simple!
ohh, if you do not want to shrink the movie and have a dual layer DVD burner with a dual layer blank DVD then you can avoid shrinking the movie!
Cheers!

Your Sony dvd recorder wont copy movies because that is pirating, which is illegal. Your recorder probably knows the rights of the movie, making some DVDs un-recorable.
