Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Live, Sonic Youth (they're still around, actually), the Smashing Pumpkins, Collective Soul, early Foo Fighters, Portishead, Sublime, Beck...
From Nirvana, go with the obvious "Never mind" and "In Utero."
For Alice in Chains, the best is probably the unplugged album.
For Pearl Jam, "Ten."
Live, go with "throwing copper"
Sonic Youth, try "Washing Machine"
the Smashing Pumpkins; the classic "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness" (not as emo as the title suggests)
Collective Soul only had one good one (as is often the case in the 80s and 90s) and it was the self-titled "Collective Soul"
The Foo Fighters' best was "The Color and the Shape"
Portishead's best is their self titled,
Sublime is probably "40 oz to freedom"
and Beck is most well-known for "Odelay"
