I am eligable for the free upgrade to Windows Vista, and I was wondering what people think of it. (I'm not looking for ONLINE articles/reveiws, I'm looking for PEOPLE who have USED it.)

Okay, when I say I'm eligible for the free upgrade, I mean I recently got a new Vista Capable laptop. But in order for the upgrade to be free, it has to be before March 31st, so I can't wait 6 months (which I would otherwise.)

If you are an Apple drone don't give me your opinion.
I am asking people who have used it or seen it used.

Wait at least 6 months...there are still going to be a lot of bugs in it even after all of the beta testing. Not all device drivers from a good portion of the manufactures have been tested in any real life scenarios. Let it get some time on it. I think I will wait until the SP1 version comes out. XP serves me just fine.

I'm typing this from my brand new Vista-ated laptop (my 6 year old trusty XP laptop decided to die.....yesterday. Self-destruct built in?)
So far...I'm not overly impressed. I recall when I first experienced XP after having Windows 98...it was easy to use right away and I don't remember having any issues. However, XP had already been out a little while when I got it. Vista seems full of little features that frankly seem tedious to use so far and though it is certainly an attractive system, it seems kinda labor-intensive to get set-up type things done. I'm going it give it a good fair chance though before I give my final verdict. I've had it less than a day!
One thing that kinda sucks though is the lag in compatibility...several peripherals that I own (that are not that old...) have no drivers (and the websites of some don't indicate that they ever are going to GET drivers?). Just made a trek over to Staples for a new router (Belkin. Works).
I had wanted to purchase another XP laptop that was Vista ready as I didn't want to be on the forefront of this new system. As (bad) luck would have it though, there were NO XP laptops to be had in any of the stores! I needed a replacement pronto and sludging from store to store only resulted in yet more Vista-happy salespeople (most of whom had no idea why they were pushing it so hard...other than that Microsoft told 'em to). I'm happy with my laptop though. And I'm going to give Vista a chance even though my first impressions are so-so. Perhaps just some getting used to is needed?

XP already has all the bugs worked out..why switch since VISTA requires so much memory to work properly. If you don't have enough memory you loose a lot of the punch it promises to have..
Not to mention, everything, and I mean everything Microsoft releases always has bugs and numerous security problems when it is first released. You would think they would work all that out before releasing a new operating system but for some reason they don't.. I think like everything else it will improve after a year or so and I am gonna wait until at least this summer to buy a copy or get a copy with a new lap top.. You should all wait too..

If you have the hardware for it, you may be okay. You have to have enough space on your hard drive and you should have 2 Gigs of RAM. Anything less will give you compromised performance. Unfortunately, it just came out today, so finding someone who has used it could take a while. Generally, a good rule is not to be the first to buy new OS software. Wait until the first service pack comes out, then get it.
But from what I have read, you should be okay as long as your computer is fairly new. If it is over a year old, you may want to hold off on Vista.

I think that if you want the nicer interface, new MC features, etc then upgrade. The downsides are that probably not all of your software will work, same goes with most older periphials. Security as well, we're still not exactly sure of many inherent risks running the new system.
I would suggest just getting the free copy, just because it's free and waiting for updates to come out. If it's not something you enjoy you can always go back. :-) A low to no software cost adventure.
Best of luck

I have been using Windows Vista for the past 6 months, It is good to look at , lot of beautification done to XP good in Security , Never dose any this with asking you , even it will not download Updates from Microsoft without asking you first. But to enjoy the Vista (ie fully enjoy). Should have a Video card >256mb ram , and your main ram should be =>2gb.. Enjoy Vista ......

The Corporate release of Vista was weeks ago. I think its the best software ever. tons of free games(Good Games) awesome DVD burning software. I also have Office 2007 and its flawless.. You really need at least 1gb ram 256 mb video ram and at least 2ghz processor to enjoy the benefits because Vista chews up Ram for lunch but its a visual marvel. Blows MAC OS back into the days of the sad Mac boot error.

man i think there are at least 4 people a day who ask this question. yeah i have used it and i have vista is crammed pack full of "cute" little features but nothing to really make me jump on the vista bandwagon. the one major thing that i do really like/look fowared to is DirectX10 which is a huge step up from 9 and will only be available for vista
