Someone played me Craig Davids' Key to my heart. I felt a meaning behind that. Also what songs mean something to you and why?

It really depends on whether you are a lyrics person or a tune person. If you are into lyrics only then you might as well stick with poetry and a Corrine Bailey Rae backing track on in the background. There was a Michael Parkinson programme where Billy Connolly and Sting agreed that the music was more important then the lyrics, specially as Connolly had just recently been to a Motörhead concert and enjoyed every minute but only understood "the Ace of Spades" as the only words.

Going off on a tangent slightly...

I think the key to a globally successful song (at least from a British Isles band), in terms of lyrics, is loose/ambiguous wording, so that millions of people can "see a meaning" in it.

If you look at a U2 or Coldplay song (globally successful bands - often #1 and #2 in the world in sales), they don't really pin many things down in black and white. E.g.:

"I still haven't found what I'm looking for",
"Let's go flying at the speed of sound, to show you how it all began..."

It's meaningless bollocks, but it sounds nice to the ear.

By contrast, Blur/Oasis/Pulp, wrote lyrics about the British class system, life in British cities...London's cocaine culture....they were not as big-selling in countries like the USA for obvious reasons (I doubt Blur/Oasis, despite being excellent, would have sold much round the world if they were not British, as that gave them a huge starting point).

i like to analyse lyrics to songs, to find their meaning. System of a Down's nearly always have some sort of hidden meaning and it is fun to work out what it is.

Yes, every song has meaning. I analize everything though, not just lyrics.
