When a spouse spends nights on end online gambling and binge drinking, his attitude becoming cruel and condescending when asked to stop, is it enough to leave a marriage? Mine doesn't even get the thrill of intimacy from our relationship anymore because the gambling is more exciting to him.

Any addiction can cause the breakup of a relationship because the addict doesn't care about anything or anyone except their next fix. The other person is left out in the cold and often has to deal with the consequences of their partners addiction. In the case of gambling that means a financial strain as well as the psychological pain of watching your loved one destroy themselves. For you, you should seriously consider getting out of the relationship if your partner refuses to give this up or at least seek professional help. As things stand it's a relationship in name only!!!

Geez everyone...too much empathy here! Be real and be honest..if the addiction is enough to end a bank account then it can end a marriage. Forget about the psychology of addiction and protect the money first and foremost. Don't let an addiction be a crutch for selfish behavior that will jeopardize YOUR marital assets.

Sounds like your husband has a serious addiction that you can't help him with. I would strong suggest counseling and a support group to overcome his gambling and drinking addiction. You're putting yourself in danger being around him. Give him an ultimatum, either he gets help or he's history. You deserve better! Be safe!!

If there is love in your heart you should try to help him. It's an addiction....... very sad and hard to deal with, but you have to be tough and honest. Are his other family members effected? Maybe an intervention is the answer. If you try everything and it's still no good then leave.

Totally. It is an addiction like any other. If they are not willing to give it up and be in the relationship, you should find someone that can.

You're emotionally ignored and now he's probably ruining your credit report and running up bills.

That's no marriage or relationship - get out and find someone that you can relate to and trust.

I am not sure ... If he is putting gambling above the marriage this may be fornication and idolatry but i am not sure.... Ask a lawyer about this. Go to http://www.drphil.com and email him and ask him for help on this.

No different than going to a casino... just easier.

Kick him to the curb, get a real man who treats you right.
