How modern are we talking here? Like still alive today or within a couple of generations?
For the latter, I'd say H.G. Wells (1886 - 1946).

I think in this current time, many people are a form of a Renaissance Man. It is pretty much required in current times.
The internet makes it much easier to get information, as to how accurate it is, that needs to be cross checked.
Main Entry: Renaissance man
Function: noun
: a person who has wide interests and is expert in several areas
In the Past it was linked to people who painted, music, invented or other such things. It is just a matter of having enough time to learn these things.

A Renaissance man, or Polymath is a matter of personal opinion! Ex-President Jimmy Carter might be considered one or even Al Gore! The last Renaissance Man of America was, in my opinion, Thomas Jefferson!
