Will Mcafee Virusscan and Windows Defender be enough to keep my computer free of spyware and other bad stuff?

There are better antivirus scanner than McAfee like BitDefender (pay version) or Avira AntiVir PE (Free), but you can keep Mcafee if you like. You still need a hardware firewall ( Router, for instance) and a software firewall (Win XP built-in) or better yet get the free ZoneAlarm. It doesn't hurt to install a couple more Free antispyware like SpywareBlaster, A-Squared Free and Spybot Seasrch&Destroy.

No. Virus and spyware are two totally separate things.
You need a really good anti-virus as well as anti-spyware programs on your computer if you download anything form the internet.
if you want my opinion, you need to pay for such protection, the free stuff is not as powerful.
I can highly recommend Kaspersky anti-virus and CounterSpy anti-spyware. They will not slow your computer down and will definitely keep all the nasties out.

No - you need a better firewall.

Get a Modem/Router with a built in Firewall and install Firewall s/w on every PC. Set both Router & PC firewalls to 'invisable' mode ('do not respond to PING') = if they can't 'see' you they won't try to get you :-) [you still need anti-virus to stop email virius and web browsing worms/virius getting in]
