My father-in-law was on a UN mission and saw a rhino up close. He must've thought he was in a zoo or something, because he gave it a twig to chew on...and sure enough the rhino charged ! lol, I guess they would accidently run over a fire in a hurry... tx for the answers, interesting links.

It hasn't been confirmed, but the Malaysian name for Rhinos is badak api, or rhino fire. Good movie and the story makes sense.

I was interested in this question, so looked it up on the web. Here is the answer I got from an animal behaviour site:
"This is a popular legend that has inspired scenes in movies, descriptions in stories, and even the names of fire-fighting units, but there have been no actual recorded accounts of this happening. From a behavioral standpoint, a rhino is more likely to run from a fire than to approach it and risk being injured. Rhinos sometimes charge defensively at humans, and perhaps they might inadvertently stamp on a fire in a human camp in the process, but it is unlikely that they would do it on purpose."
