Good question because the first cars were actually electric.around 1900, electric land vehicles in America outsold all other types of cars. Then in the several years following 1900, sales of electric vehicles took a nosedive as a new type of vehicle came to dominate the consumer market. Steam power then combustible engines powered by gas, diesel, and kerosene.

it's not completely dead, they are still trying to perfect it, GM had a beauty at the autoshow this year that will go 80 miles until it needs recharged and you just plug it in on the front fender to any 110 volt wall plug.

I think it killed itself, too heavy, too short a battery life, and very expensive.
Lets not kid ourselves, the motor industry has no intention of dumping the petrol motor.
