http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thessaloniki
Thessaloníki is the second largest city of Greece and capital of the Macedonia region of Greece. It was built in 315 B.C. by Kassander after the name of his wife and sister of Alexander the Great. It has been the most important city of Macedonia ever since. Do not confuse Macedonia with the mistakenly called Slavic country who is trying to use the same name for political and imperialistic reasons. F.Y.R.O.M. as it is properly called has nothing to do with Macedonia, its history and its people. It is modern Slavic country created after the break-up of Yugoslavia and inhabited by Slavbulgarians and Albanians. For its survival is trying to claim Macedonia history and land. Macedonia has always been a Greek region and Macedonians have always been Greek people.

Thessalonika or better Thessaloniki is located in nothern Greece and more specifically in Macedonia, which is a big area in the north part of Greece. It's the main city in Macedonia and so we can say that it's its capital. The first capital of Macedonia was Pella,in the times of Phillipos and his sun Alexander the great but later, about 315BC the king of Macedonia, Kassandros, united 26 different small towns, called ''komes'', and created Thessaloniki, which named it after his wife and Alexander's sister, name! He made Thessaloniki the capital of Macedonia..

Thessaloniki is the capital of Macedonia (the authentic Macedonia) , the co-capital of Greece!
There is only one Macedonia,my friend!
I know you are a little bit confused,it is not your fault.
It has been one of the worst things ever.
For some decades now,the ex-communist state of Yugoslavia makes propaganda claiming that the name Macedonia belongs to them.
It is something funny for all the educated people of the planet but for the rest...it is something unknown.
Thessaloniki is the capital of Macedonia since many many years.
There is not another Macedonia, that name is fake (I know, everyone calls that country with that name,it is a political game) but the truth is different.
If you search history you will find out the stealing not only of the name but the stealing of all our history!

Thessaloniki (proper Greek "Θεσσαλονίκη")
is still the capital of the authentic(Greek) Macedonia.
The city was founded circa 315 BC by Cassander, the King of Macedon (Μακεδών), on or near the site of the ancient town of Therma and twenty six other local villages. He named it after his wife Thessaloniki, the sister of Alexander the Great.
It was always part of Greece and it is one of the most beautiful and vibrant Greek city.
Do not confuse the authentic(Greek) Macedonia ( the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedonia or Macedon was the birth place of Alexander) with the modern state of republic of (Slavic/Albanian)-Macedonia as they are not related at all. The confusion has started a few years ago because that small state started to use the name “Republic of Macedonia” causing a great confusion with authentic Macedonia in Greece.
