Where is the prettiest and still has a few big cities around in driving distance in the New England area?

It depends on what you like. If you like an active nightlife, go to Boston. It's a very fun, cosmopolitan city.
If you just want peace and quiet, try Muskogeon, Maine. A small town about an hour north of Portland, Maine.
Montpelier, Vermont is great if you want the pretty leaves and stuff like that.
