Required, as in: you want to choose a school you'll pay for, where your child will be forced to take a foreign language? Nobody's trying to stop you from doing that.

Or required, as in: you want to force the general public to pay with their tax money to fund schools where children are forced by law to pass a foreign language or else they will be held back? That's different.

I think learning extra languages is a great idea. I don't think that gives me the right to make other people pay for my kids to do it though.

I do not think it should be required for young children. If it is something you want to learn or want kids to learn then great. Being bilingual has so many benefits and the earlier they learn the better they are at it. Junior and High school yes I think it should be, never can learn to much. let's say your Caucasian and have Mexican American children. They speak English but you also want them to learn Spanish, I think then that the Spanish speaking parent should start teaching that language as soon as the American parent starts teaching them English. Hope that all makes sense.

i think that if students are in a bilingual country such as Canada or if it has a secondary language in large or important areas, that that language should be required. I do not however think it should be mandatory to learn other languages unless one wants to, although they should be offered early on in elementary unlike some places where you can only start different languages late in high school or even only as one starts univeristy/ college
