do you take them with you or leave them at the desk?
i've heard that they contain enough info to enable someone to access your personal info from your stay....true or false.... makes me think to consider taking it through a shredder myself.....
anyone else?

They have no personal info on them

That is only true if your key card making machine is tied into the Hotels property management system. If they are independent of each other they do not contain any information. As for key cards themselves, they are only programmed for the length of your stay. It is always best to return your cards to the desk, so they are not left on housekeeping carts and such. If you are due to check out say Monday at 12noon, your information only remains on the key for an hour or two after check out as a grace period for a late check out. If it is the front desk staff you are worried about, they already have full access to all your personal information from the hotel PMS system. No need to take a shredder. Just be cautious as you would be with your wallet and keys.

You can take the card with you (the hotel doesn't mind) or you leave it they will reuse it. The card expires & is erased automatically as soon as you check out.

Info on the card consists of the lock code to your room, the "key" and your credit card that you have on file for that hotel for that specific stay (not all hotels/cards will do it) it is usually optional.
This is used if the hotel has a restaurant or stores and you want to "charge it to your room", you give them you card (hopefully they will also i.d. you) when purchasing and it will be automatically charged on that card.

Now, if during your stay someone else happens to have your card and they wanted to charge on it, it is possible. But once you've checked out, then no, they would be able to see that while they are charging from the restaurant, bar, gift shop, etc.

But they are pretty safe, just don't lose it during your stay, if you do then notify the front desk and they will expire that card and make you a new one.

The cards mean nothing...except to open your door...once your stay is over the cards are no longer valid...If I find them I take them to the front desk when I check out...otherwise...I just leave them in the room...hope this is helpful.

I doubt they contain any information beyond the room number and I 'trust' they are scrambled, reprogrammed before being put back into service for the next tenant.
Is this a naive position?

I personally take them to the reception desk and watch them being shredded that way I'm never left wondering.

leave them at the desk. i travel all the time and the only thing they put on the card is the code to unlock the door and the date to make it not work anymore

I thought they just had the magnetic key info and that the encoding was changed daily . . .
I hope a hotel clerk posts with the real info . . !

I'v heard the same thing. But I saw on a show that they don't. So, I'm not really sure. I'd take it and destroy it.
