to be perfectly honest (and not trying to be rude at all) trying to dress punk wont get you anywhere. it will more than likely alienate you from your friends who dont dress similar, and the people who believe they are "true punks" will shun you too.
the punk culture is all about doing whatever the hell you want. wearing what you want, usually darker colors, band tees (just not bands like daughtry and all american rejects) and having safety pins holding them together because of the holes.
id advise you to stay out of hot topic, or if you do buy from there, never wear a whole outfit made out of clothes you bought from there. it never looks right.
maybe try going to some shows and see what those people are wearing. that would be best, i think. and you should definitely look into the hair aspect of it. getting a funky, edgy, cut that has angles and isnt even is very punk-ish. coloring it is too.
but you have to be careful not to let yourself get tagged as one thing or another and not to take it too far. you will want to get a job soon, and most employers dont look for pierced faces, hot pink hair, and torn up clothes.
most of all, have fun with it. its a lot of fun going to shows and wearing clothes that make you feel like a bad@$$.
i used to do a lot of baggier jeans and black tanks. and my hair was always changing.
hope i helped!

What a neat question! The whole idea, as I understand it, is to be original. Punk made a debut in London & NYC in the late 70s/early 80s and still going strong. It's also evolved into 'Rock' and 'Goth.' You can use images from those genres and years (think of David Bowie) You can also use what's in your closet! And the funny thing is: basic department stores supply punky stuff too.
Basic necessities: Anything w/a skull, Big belt over your extra large screen-printed shirt, mini skirts, coloured tights, boots, heels, or vans, big earrings, lots of bracelets, dyed hair (or those clippy hair attachments).
But, like I said, it's about being original. Put your own take on the style and utilize what you already have. Good luck!

first off, dont ever say you want to be punk anywhere else but here,
otherwise you will be kown as a POSER.
1st off,you need to listen to the music. first listen to 80s punk and even 60s rock. examples:sex pistols, rolling stones, rancid, the clash.then once youve mastered "old-school" you can go into the 21st centrury. bands to listen to:new found glory, afi,the offspring, senses fail, takign back sunday etc.
only brag about music if you know the bands inside and out.
if you want buy a gutiar, bass or drum set.
2nd step:take out some movies such as the outsiders, slc punk, etc.
3. act cool. hang where follow rockers hang out.[high school football games, battle of bands, dunkin donuts, etc.] and make sure to make friends with high school kids.espeically males.hot ones.
4. now for the clothes, hot topic is great but no deep down in stores. only get skating shoes if you skate. for now get a pair of converse, black camis, a tight black sweatshirt, tight jeans, sex braclets, short demin mini skirts. and go to www.hottopic.com and look at what the ppl are wearing on the home page. rip up some old clothes and put them together with saftey pins. egt one of those mens vests for girls, long black shirts, band shirts, off the shoulder shirts, black tank tops ,studded braclets, studded belt, boots, big earrings,,etc.
5.makeup:smokey eyes eyeliner!!
6.hair- messy,volume.
7.get more high school friends.
8. experiemnt.take part in drugs, smoking,drinking,sexual stuff
9/congrats.youve gradulated from punk school.

Well punk is an idealology and lifestyle other than a dresscode. Punk "style" was worn for a reason. in rebellion to the 70's respectable look (long smooth hair ironed clothes etc) punks would don mohawks or short hair and pretty much DIY attire.

dont try too hard, like you can't just go to school one day and have all these "punk" clothes on, you have to do it step by step
like start with the shoes, (vans or converse maybe)
then with the t shirt (maybe band t's)
then makeup (the whole eye liner thing)
then the accessories
