Yes, you can. Not all ATMs are set up to handle deposits, but most are. And you should use an ATM from your own bank. Finally, don't deposit cash through an ATM; it's too risky. But for checks it's great. Your roommate is mistaken.

You can deposit money into your bank account at your banks atm maichine, even if the card does not carry the Visa/MC logo. The whole point of the original ATM cards, before they became debit cards with the logo, was to allow the user to bank without using a teller, this included deposits. ATM cards without the logo cannot be processed as credit card and therefore cannot be accepted by some merchants.

You can deposit at the ATM at any of your bank branches . Most ATMs at grocery stores or other banks, don't think so, that would be a bad idea, even if you could.
I deposited at my banks ATMs many times tho because it was way faster.
And what the heck do credit cards and ATM deposits have to do with each other ? Is the roommate stoned ?

Yes, you can. But it's probably safer to go to the bank and deposit money there, instead of the ATM machine. You're more likely to get mugged at the ATM machine.
Also, if it's a savings account, beware that you can only do 3 transactions in a months' time period. (Savings accounts are government-regulated because of the great Depression in the 1930s.) I had to change my savings to a checking account because of this.

If you mean, can you deposit money in your checking or savings account using your banking card at an ATM, the answer is yes, if its an ATM that accepts deposits. Usually those are only at the bank you do business with though, so that they can handle the money that is going into your account with them.

You deposit money to your checking account, your debit card works off your checking account. When you use it, money is taken away (debited) from your checking. You just need to maintain a positive balance in your checking. You can deposit money into your checking account with your debit card at the ATM.
