I have an 81 with 9000 miles on it. On a ride it stopped charging. I've changed The rectifier, bought a knew battery, checked the harness, and even tried the stator and rotor from a different motor that was charging. I'm stumped!!! Is there any thing in the case to check? Any feedback is VERY much appreciated. Thanks.

they are known for that pal. number 1 answer... Charging sucks on those. just be glad your cam lobes havent chipped off yet...
ANYWAY. find, and unhook the 3 yellow {usually} wires from your stator assy. start the bike up and using a jumper, hook a standard 110v light bulb to each one, and either of the other 2 as ground. label them A B C and see if the bulb gets bright as you rev it. you should have AC current between any and all combinations of those 3 wires. IE A+ B- and so on. that will tell you if its in the frame or engine. Those produce AC voltage, and it should be 60-80 VAC revved to same rpms you cruise at. IF NOT your about to start buying. I hear that the rotors on those fail lots too, so it may not be just stator windings. Contact Electrex if you want to solve it forever, they have kits for most bikes with such problems. Good Luck.

--Does the cover have any scratches or dents in it. If the cover has any damage, the brushes won't be aligned properly to magnatise the rotor.
--The brushes could be worn down and need replacing.
--When you changed the stator, did you leave it in the original cover it came out of? Or did you put it in your cover? Try using the stator, brushes & cover from the other bike.
--Unplug the stator wires from the wire harness. Using a volt meter, with the key on, test between the black & white wires on the wire harness side. There should be battery voltage.
--If you know how to use a multi-meter, then test all of the components in the charging system. If you don't have a shop manual, buy one!

Replace the idiot light. The 12 volts that excites the alternator comes through that light, so if the light is burnt out, the alternator doesn't run.
I had a 78 CB750. It's been a while since I thought of that thing.

sorry I cant help got the same prob on my 1980 cb750 was told these bikes had a recurring charging prob but never found the fix if you get one would you consider passing it on to me as I am stumped as well and my bike is ice covered right now .
