He is known as the greatest European mathematician of the middle ages. He WAS born in Italy, but traveled and worked extensively throughout Europe and Northern Africa and therefore was considered to be a European. Italy is of course in Europe - but the term European indicates a broader audience for his work.

Ok well the thing is Italy is part of Europe so I would guess that both could be considered true.
