Most animals have one don't they?

Most large mammals have a 'breeding season' which ensures that their young are born in spring when plenty of food is available. Presumably hominids with their extended childhood in the care of the adults could be born at any time of the year. This would be a very successful breeding strategy and make up for the depredations on the species caused by carnivores. The other effect would be the increased bonding between the sexes throughout the year, adding cohesion to the group.

Bonobo chimpanzees play for all kinds of reasons- in exchange for child care, for food, for whatever. They have sex to barter.
And why? Oh, gee, well, why do we have estrus on average 13 times a year? We're oddballs, we're taking ove the planet, and we could cure overpopulation better if we all took birth control but twice a year.
And increase uterine cancer.
Maybe this is part of guided evolution? :-)

Male animals of other species aren't dumb enough to think females will be constantly receptive to their advances. How nice it would to be to just be fertile once or twice a year.

yes, we are animals to an extent, but we are not deer in a forest, and besides, we don't lower our standards to that of an animal when we look for a partner!

Because humans are the only mammals known to do it just for fun. Unless you want to say dolphins too, but that's debatable.
