I teach martial arts for a living. I'm not in it for the money, I want to help people. Everyone I have ever given a flyer or offered a free class, this number somewhere in the thousands by now, has never come in. It seems ludicrous that in a time where fearmongering is rampant and people do not trust eachother that they would not wish to learn how to defend themselves. On this same train of thought, I find it ridiculous that even though everyone has stress that kills them in every day life they do not want to get rid of it even when someone offers something that would help them. I just want to know what is going on in the heads of people.

Spirituality is free but people are paying for it- Now that's a dichotomy. Paying big bucks for these cheating religious organizations. So Don't be offended. I was also giving out flayers at a collage for a free Bhakti Yoga class offering free food afterwords. Only a few would show up after passing out hundreds of flayers and advertising. People want to be cheated. They aren't interested in real Knowledge or truth. That is the nature of the Material world Cheaters and the Cheated. Go to harekrishnatemple.c for knowledge on overcoming cheaters or and understand the real psychology of why peole are in this world. According to the Vedas only one fourth of the souls come to the material world (the less intelligent ones ( God is canvasing to come home to a free world where one does not have to work hard like an as$- but they wont go they will take birth after birth rotting in this material world. Just see even God is offering for free but they don't want.

Wish I lived in California, I'm in the South, I would take you up on it..that is something I always wanted to learn...but, to answer your question...they probably think you are going to get them in there and there is some kind of catch to it...for example...they come to your class, and think, now comes, I need a suit, ect...which cost money, or there is some hidden agenda in it...if you really arn't out for the money...make sure you are telling in your flyer besides it's free, that you are doing this because you love it, and there are no hidden cost...because, most of the time, nothing in life comes for free...gosh, here in the south there are so many kids even adults as myself...that would love something like that, and here there is nothing for anyone free, it's always, they take up a collection, which if you don't put it in, you look like your a cheapscape....so make it plainly clear that it is totally free, that you want to give back to society and help people that can't afford things such as this....some kids have no where to go after school, with the way parents are now, either one parent supporting them, or both, and always gone, whether it be for work or anything else...I think this would be a great thing for kids who have noone to go to outside of school when their parents or who ever is responsible for them isn't going to be fun..and it could make some child, even adults who are lonely and scared, it would give them so much...so get your flyers to the right people...give it to the office at schools, ect...let them hand them out...and I bet you will get more people to come...especially women/teen girls need to learn this in this day and time...good luck

one free class doesn't help anyone, and you say you want to help people, yet you only offer a free class? i presume only one or two classes as most who teach martial arts do that.
I find most of today's martial arts center nothing but money making machine, If i were to learn martial arts, i would learn it from a real master, one who would truly understands the value of martial arts as well, you wouldn't be going down my pocket, instead would focus daily on my training more and more and work with me closely, i am willing to be a dedicated student, but to only a teacher who truly appreciates martial arts. not just someone who knows martial arts.
and since your teach martial arts for a living, thus that means they gotta pay up and people don't bother with one or two classes unless they really don't have anything to do and why would they even bother to go to one or two classes....when they gotta pay for the rest. Martial arts should be subsidised by the government and made a law, it would keep all the obesity away and everyone healthy.

People have been well-trained to see free offers as coming with strings attached. The 'string' could be a hidden cost, a scam, a sales pitch, etc. Thus comes the old, old saying 'there is no such thing as a free lunch'.

Our trust has been eroded by experience.

There is the old addage that nothing is free. Like mention above, they avoid your free class because they do not want the sales pitch after. I am not saying that is what you do, but that is the expectation. If you want a higher turn out, add that to your flyer. "No sales pitch or obligation...truly free martial arts lessons"

it is not free - they'll have to spend time in class, and listen to your sales pitch when it's over.

You can't learn proper self-defense in one class. Yeah, you can block a blow or two, but it will only make them angrier. Or you can teach a way of keeping a person pinned down for 10 minutes until police arrive?

Not to mention that criminals won't fight you unless there are 2-3 of them. Can your class teach to deal with that?

When it has to do with something like that, they're probably afraid of a scam or that you will be really pushy in trying to get them to sign up for paid lessons later. Unfortunately, in today's world, we learn that "there's no such thing as a free lunch" and "there's usually a catch".

Many people think there are strings attached to "freebies". Example: this person wants to sign me up for lessons I can't afford or don't want.
Don't let this stress you out. They are the ones who are losing out, not you.
